The new semester started last week and with it brought a new group of #DigCit students. One of the first things we do is learn about digital footprint/tattoo (check out Commonsensemedia.org) and then Google ourselves. Before we do that, I ask the students to predict in their blog what they think they will find and how other people would view them based on their online profile. After they spend time Googling themselves, their
usernames, their social media accounts and Google Images, some of them had an eye opening experience. Below are a few of the
Blogposts. We are learning how our Blogs can be a vehicle through which student voice is heard. If you have a minute, please read a couple and comment. Thank you!

I noticed that not all of the class blog posts are available to read. I would like to find out of some of the class found negative info about themselves? I would like to ask two questions to the entire class. What actions would you be willing to take if you found harmful information about yourself? At this point in your life, how difficult would it be for you to change your social media habits?

ReplyDeleteI wonder why you couldn't read them. I was able to open all of them... weird. Thank you for reading and commenting!
ReplyDeletePretty cool that kids are doing this early in high school. It's one of those things that I have to do often now that I'm looking for jobs. I've learned that while my accounts might all be private, that might not matter if an employer tells you that they need to friend or follow you or even asks for your account passwords. Kinda freaky, but if you need a job, where do you draw the privacy line?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great exercise!
ReplyDeleteI know when I did it, I was relieved ... Not that I was worried what I would post but what others would post. I am glad I spent the time to learn about privacy controls before I dove into social media.
Rachel, you kids are lucky to have you as a teacher... I plan to do this same exercise with my students.
Thank you! Got students are lucky that they have such an energetic, forward thinking teacher. I Google myself a lot too for the same reasons you do.
DeleteI was able to open all blogs and commented on almost all. A worthy project :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
